Month End Review - October 2013

Month End Review - October 2013As always I like to recap on the past month’s posts, going on’s, and general happenings. This is usually a quick review of where I felt I succeeded and sometimes failed during the prior month.

This month was a mix of both which is not uncommon in anyway it seems. And as I dive into why this month was different I want to do it with full disclosure that I will be talking a lot about the challenges I am facing personally and how they translate into my professional life as well as here on the Sales Pro Blog.

First of all my wife and I found out we are having a baby boy!!!

We were very excited for that news and can’t wait to welcome the little guy into the world sometime mid-late February 2014.

As it is though he is definitely going to be a bit different then the other boys because he will be born with a deformity. His right arm, below the elbow did not fully develop and likely won’t from here on out.

As you can imagine this has put a mental strain on my wife and I even though she and the baby are otherwise 100% perfectly healthy. Thankfully (for the most part) things are moving along now as expected.

Although we have twice as many doctor appointments as a “normal” birth, we are doing what we can to make sure they both stay healthy.

Why Am I Telling You This?

Although I often share personal moments from my life on this site, it is truly meant to be exclusively for professionals in the sales field.

However I am a big proponent that there is something to learn from every moment in life. And this moment in our lives will definitely be a learning experience.

Not only in the direct knowledge we are gaining from OBGYNs, Specialist, Genetic Counselors, etc. But also how the two of us react together during big moments like this. The moments in life that take your breath away, good and bad.

In sales this can relate to the knowledge you gain about your product and how you work as a team.

For example, when I went through training there was a LOT of information I was expected to absorb. There was a strong desire to do so in order to be successful at my new job. Not only was there an internal drive to do well and be the best I can be; but there was the external drive of the other trainees, trainers, and managers watching me.

I again have a desire to learn all there is to know about what we know and why my son has a deformity. Additionally I will need to learn how life will be different with a child who has only one complete arm.

When we first found out about his arm my wife and I were pretty distraught. We, like every other parent in the world, were expecting and hoping for a perfect child. Clearly the Universe has different plans for us.

And although there are good days and there are bad days, we are both working extra hard to be there for each other. To support one another and communicate our needs.

That my friends is the sign of a good team. I feel that my sales team has something similar. When we are going through hard times (end of quarter, major deal on the table, or even a major deal lost) we stand by each other 100% and do our best to learn from the situation.

I covered a few of these topics in October but if you missed any of the past months posts be sure to check them out.
